ORGANIC LAWN CARE

Spring Lawn Care and Management

Organic Turf Management for Playing FieldsWhile spring is in the air, your yard may still be looking quite bare without proper care. Make your lawn the envy of the neighborhood with these tips for maintenance throughout the season. To obtain optimum performance from your lawn it is important to employ the appropriate management practices at the correct times of year. As the world outside finally begins to turn green after a long winter, it’s time once again to pay attention to your lawn. To create a thriving, beautiful lawn, you need to hit the ground running in the spring. Here are some of the best practices for a beautiful lawn you can employ this spring and summer.

Overseeding

The most optimal time to seed your lawn is during the late summer or early fall. However, spring is still a great time to rejuvenate a barren or thin turf through overseeding. In the spring, overseeding should be done after aerating the turf and loosening the soil. Always mow your lawn lower than normal before overseeding and rake the soil to loosen it up so the seeds can germinate better, and plant seeds according to the directions provided with the seeds. We recommend utilizing a spreader for overseeding, though you can do small areas by hand. You’ll want to feed and water your seeds, typically you just want to keep the soil moist and lightly water it with about 1 inch per week, ideally in the morning when air temperatures are lower, just to keep the soil moist once the lawn is established.

Fertilization

compost tea by Lincoln LandscapingFertilization is one of the most important aspects to improve the quality of your turf and make your grass shine. Grass requires nitroge, potassium, and phosphates which come from soil naturally, however more can help. To accurately determine what exactly your soil needs, you will require a soil test for the best results. Soil tests can be done for free in many places or for a fee.

We also recommend top dressing your turf for the best results, which is basically just adding a thin layer of soil onto your turf to improve the soil quality. Top dressing can be helpful for uneven terrain and other unsightly common lawn problems such as bare spots and discolored grass from a lack of nutrients, and most importantly improves your soil’s condition, providing an ideal environment for your grass to grow in.

The best fertilizer typically for turfgrasses are a slow release organic nitrogen fertilizer or you can go with a compost tea brew. Typically the best time to apply is in late Spring or in the early Fall.

Aeration

Aeration creates a system of pores within your soil to carry nutrients and moisture to your soil. This is done by removing plugs of soil with a core aerator, which allows the soil to breathe much more easier. Aeration is ideally done during the early spring for cool season grasses, and in the late spring for warm season grasses, but can be done as late as the summer and fall. We recommend aeration for any one looking to revitalize their lawn completely as it is great for older, thin patches of grass that are unsightly. Aerating and proper fertilization with lead to a much more vigorous lawn with proper and luscious green growth all over.
