Organic Lawn Care and

Turf Management

WOW – Where Organics Work

Organic lawn care and turf management is the heart and true passion of company President, Michael E. Kolenut.

An organic program is a process, where we build the biology of the soil, and produce turf that is strong and naturally resistant to most disease and pests. In addition to this healthy, vibrant, dense turf with great color, we employ “Low Tech Common Sense” solutions to help maintain this organic system we have put into place. A NOFA registered Organic Company, I have the distinct honor to teach a leg of the NJ Organic Land Care program at Rutgers University to other landscapers who are trying to go green and learn a better way to serve their clients.

This residential property in Ridgewood, New Jersey encompassed replacing the existing lawn with an organic sod installation. After the existing top layer of the lawn was removed a soil test was completed and a layer of composted soil; alive with fungi, bacteria, Protozoa, worms and micro arthropods which changed the dynamics of the soil, was then placed down upon which the sod would take root.

Providing leadership is essential as we transition from a traditional, product approach, with high nitrogen, high phosphorous urea based fertilizers, toxic weed killers, and worst of all, systemic insecticides and fungicides that are applied whether you have a problem or not. These are all products that are all common in most lawn programs today. These chemical programs have many products that are carcinogens. There is a better, safer way.

Many lawns are addicted to massive infusions of fertilizers and to frequent watering. These common practices lead to lawns that are not able to defend themselves against pests, as well as lawns with shallow roots that are vulnerable to drought. A well-planned organic lawn has healthy soil and deep-rooted healthy grass able to withstand most local conditions and robust enough to crowd out weeds and to shrug off the occasional pest. Your lawn may be small, but the cumulative impact of pesticide, fertilizer, and water use on all the lawns across North America is huge. If you don’t use chemicals on your lawn, they can’t run off and hurt the wild lands or water sources near you, nor can they harm you, your family, or your neighbors.

Before OrganicsAfter

It may be time to rethink your strategy and “go green” and practice sustainable landscaping and lawn care practices. If you are thinking of transitioning your lawn to organic, here is an overview of what you need to know about going green. The key to a healthy lawn is healthy soil and good mowing, watering and fertilizing practices. Healthy soil contains high organic content and is teeming with biological life. Healthy soil supports the development of healthy grass that is naturally resistant to weeds and pests. In a healthy, fertile and well‐ maintained lawn, diseases and pest problems are rare.

Increasing the organic matter in your lawn by as little as 5% will quadruple the soil’s ability to hold water. This is where compost tea comes into the picture. Compost tea is a concentrated organic liquid fertilizer that is made from steeping biologically active compost in aerated water. Compost tea is nutritionally rich and can help provide plants with beneficial soil bacteria.

Did you know if you remove the basket when you are cutting the grass and the clippings fly that is the food for this biology in the soil? Gone in a day or two, these clippings provide as much nitrogen back into the soil as a bag of fertilizer. In organics we do not cut the grass short because that kind of mowing puts an enormous amount of stress on the turf. Each blade of grass is a leaf, and with less leaf area, each grass plant has less surface area to provide the photosynthesis that fuels leaf and root development.

When the lawn is mowed very low, the actual crowns of the grass plants themselves can be injured by the lawnmower blade, and this opens up a host of cascading problems. As the plant puts all its energy into recovering from the crown damage, it opens up a weakness in the lawn, increasing the pressure from weeds, insects, and diseases. Once a lawn suffers widespread crown damage, it may struggle against weed invasions and grub infestations for the entire growing season. Even if the plant crowns aren’t physically damaged, the short grass offers little shade to the sensitive plant crowns, making the lawn susceptible to summer heat stress. Organics is science based knowledge that Lincoln Landscaping routinely employ to eliminate pesticide use on your property and provide a safe environment for your children and your pets.
