Refuse Removal and Pruning for a Healthier Garden

After the cold winter and fall months, your lawn and garden probably needs a good, thorough cleaning to ensure an appealing, healthier garden you and your plants will enjoy in the coming spring and summer. There are plenty of simple ways to improve your home garden areas and make them look better than ever. Lincoln Landscaping has provided plenty of our customers with an enjoyable garden space after providing thorough cleanups and more. While a lawn might look like a lot of work to improve the appeal of it, there are plenty of simple ways to drastically create a wonderful and attractive garden every year with just a few hours of maintenance each spring.

Spring Raking Maintenance - Lincoln Landscaping Inc. To start, your lawn likely has plenty of natural refuse you’ll want to remove from the previous fall. Even if you did rake leaves previously, there are likely plenty still left over, as well as other refuse such as twigs, sticks, or dead leaves and grass. You’ll also want to remove any litter that may have blown into your lawn or even unpleasant waste such as dog feces, which can contain pathogens that can be harmful to the composting process.

We always recommend to rake leaves in the fall, as this can prevent a common fungal disease known as snow mold. Raking during the springtime is also always recommended to decrease thatch build-up, and for just removing any extra leaves that might have fallen after raking in the fall. You should also be looking out for any other natural refuse you might have in your garden, like pinecones and other refuse that doesn’t break down very easily.

Pruning is another important task for ensuring the best looking plants in your spring garden. This also ensures a healthier plant and will help ensure your plants have healthy new growth in the spring. Pruning is a very important aspect of the spring cleanup process, as proper pruning will encourage the plant to thrive and grow in the coming months.

Spring cleaning can be a great and enjoyable experience, and doesn’t take very long to completely transform a lawn through a simple process of cleaning up. There are also plenty of other ways to improve your lawn while you’re out there cleaning up, such as getting your beds ready and transplanting any of your existing plants to a better spot.

Transplanting and Garden Bed Preparation

New Spring Growth - Lincoln Landscaping Inc.After all the refuse is gone, you should start improving your garden beds by applying fertilizer, mulch, and removing all and any weeds before they spread more. You should also consider applying some compost to your grass, trees, or even shrubs.

When creating a new garden bed, or expanding or revitalizing an existing one, you should always start by tilling the land in order to break up the soil so that plants can have a much easier time growing through the soil. Other methods of creating beds include raised beds which is our favorite method, or creating berms which are perfect for shrubbery for appearance purposes. Berms and raised beds are perfect for areas with poor soil, and can ensure your plants are growing in the best possible soil environment.

Weed matting can be a very useful addition to your garden beds, and remove a lot of maintenance in the coming spring months. Simply cut out areas where you are going to plant something at and you will have significantly less weeds in your gardens. By blocking off most of your soil with weed matting, you will prevent most weeds from ever growing in any spots you cover up and this can help eliminate plenty of strain on yourself spent removing pesky weeds that just won’t go away.

Once your beds are cleaned up and ready to be planted, you can start planting whatever you want! Hardy perennials, trees, and shrubs are best to be planted during the early spring months and should be fine even if a frost passes through. However, plants like tender perennials and annuals should only be planted after the final frost has passed and you’re sure spring is here to stay.

Spring cleanup can be a tough, but fun task to perform and sure is a rewarding experience once it’s all said and done. Your lawn will come out looking much better than before, and you’ll be able to look out at a beautiful garden that’s ready to thrive.
