After we received a call from a nice couple who had difficulty maintaining a good looking lawn, and were looking to improve the appeal of their lawn with our organic lawn care services. We visited the site so we could start soil testing and figure out why the client had such a hard time getting a nice lawn.
There are many factors that can make a lawn look very rough, but this lawn was a combination of a tough site due to the shade from the trees, the slope, roots and bad soil. The soil had an extremely low organic matter which is probably the biggest contributor to why this lawn was unable to shine. A soil test is important for this step so that we can measure how much organic material is needed for every lawn.
The solution? Compost, the correct blend of seed, and relieving compaction in the soil with an aggressive aeration process. The result being a much more healthy and organic lawn that will maintain good soil structure and tilth for years.
Soil that has good tilth has large pore spaces which allows air and water to flow through much easier. Roots will only grow where the soil tilth, which allows for adequate levels of soil oxygen. Soil with tilth also holds a reasonable supply of water and nutrients. Properly aggregated soil contains a range of pore sizes, as different sizes of pores play different roles in the soil’s physical functioning.
Large pores drain rapidly and are vital for maintaining proper air exchange in wet periods, preventing oxygen deficiencies that can easily kill plants and increase pest problems.
All of these steps, when combined will allow for a much more fertile, healthy, and most importantly organic soil to thrive and allow for proper lawn growth as seen in the before and after photos above.
