Eastern Redbud Growth
Arbor Day Foundation Free Native Trees Review
At Lincoln Landscaping we encourage and try to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. A tad bit over three years ago we did a blog post for Arbor Day 2021 promoting their membership initiative wherein for joining their organization they would send to you 10 native trees of your choice.
Curious as to what you’d get with regards to the trees, our web developer, who has a brother living on top a mountain ridge in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, decided to practice what we preach, and gave a gift membership to him back in 2021. They have good growing seasons there but the winters can be fairly harsh and severe. Of the ten saplings planted, six of them survived and are now showing sustained and healthy growth.
The Arbor Day Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit conservation and education organization. A million members, donors, and partners support our programs to make our world greener and healthier.
Well the Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) saplings arrived looking just like the pictures below.
Three years later; lo and behold we received these today of the same Arbor Day Foundation Redbud Trees going into three (3) years growth. The flowers are clusters of tiny magenta buds that swell into showy rosy pink flowers in early spring before the leaves appear, with the long-lasting blossoms putting on a show for two to three weeks. Redbuds are beautiful, small shade trees that light up the spring garden and provide food for pollinators and birds. Of the ten saplings planted, six of them survived and are now showing sustained and healthy growth.
If you join the Arbor Day Foundation (for just $10 for a 6-month membership) you get to choose 10 free trees to either be mailed to you or as a gift for someone else. You’ll get to choose between flowering trees, wild bird garden trees, White Pine, Norway Spruce, White Fir, Oak trees, American Redbud, Autumn classics, Douglas firs, or a mix of trees.
ALL IN ALL – seems like a great deal to me. Why not join today and plant some native trees of your own?
Susrainable Landscaping With Native Plants
“Few arborists would suggest planting trees on a three-foot center, but if we planted our trees in groups of three or more on ten-foot centers, the resulting root matrix would keep them locked in place through thick and thin. None of the trees would develop into a single majestic specimen tree, but together they would form a single grove of trees that the eye will take in just as if they were one large tree. Planting tree groves will also protect against the domino effect. Every time we take down a tree, we make the remaining trees more vulnerable to straight-line winds. There is one catch to this approach, however: the trees must be planted young, so their roots can interlock as they grow.”
