Sustainable Landscaping with Native Plants

Family: Betulaceae
Common Name | American Beech
Botanical Name | Carpinus caroliniana
Native of Eastern U.S.

The most climate-adaptable of our native trees, Americn Hornbeam is found in both upland and floodplain forests throughout eastern North America. It is noted for its multi-season beautiful thin, bluish-gray bark that appears to “ripple” as the tree matures, which leads to its alternative name: “Musclewood.” Simple toothed leaves are dark green and have variable yellow, orange, red or reddish purple fall color. Its native beauty lends itself to naturalistic plantings.

The leaves are elliptical, simple, and alternate with double serrated margins seldom marred by insect or disease. One of the few landscape trees that does well in full shade. The smooth, slate gray bark adds winter interest.
