Fringed Bleeding Heart | Dicentra Eximia
Sustainable Landscaping With Native Plants
“Oh, heart, if one should say to you that the soul perishes like the body, answer that the flower withers, but the seed remains. “
Dicentra eximia, commonly called fringed bleeding heart, is a native wildflower of the eastern United States that typically occurs on forest floors, rocky woods and ledges in the Appalachian Mountains. Lovely old-fashioned shade garden plant with ferny, gray-green foliage and sprays of reddish-pink, heart-shaped flowers from May to September. Deciduous. Attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Deer resistant.
Fringed Bleeding Heart has pink heart shaped flowers that adorn fern-like leaves that will not die back as the traditional old fashioned bleeding heart does. The perfect addition to a shade garden that once established will be more tolerant of dry conditions. Deadhead to prolong blooming. Prefers moist hummus soils with good drainage.
