Making Schools Safer – an Organic Transition

Making Schools Safer Through Organic Lawn and Turf Management

Organic Lawn, Turf, and Property Management

Schools are teaching our children and the community the importance of sustainable practices. Across the nation, implementation of green initiatives has become a major strategic goal for public and private academic institutions.

More and more schools and municipalities are making the transition to use only natural lawn care practices whenever possible, and refrain from using synthetic pesticides (insecticides, herbicides, etc.) and fertilizers on school grounds, playing fields and other areas where children play.

Madison Board of Education offered us an amazing opportunity to cut and maintain the school grounds at all five locations in town. Paying the price; the previous company did not fulfill the contract; giving us an opportunity to shine.

The safest way to a beautiful lawn is to work with nature, not against it. At Lincoln Landscaping of Franklin Lakes New Jersey, we focus on the soil to build a beautiful, deep-rooted, dense lawn. Costs and maintenance requirements are lower vs. synthetic pesticide lawn care programs after the first one to two years. In order to successfully transition from conventional lawn care to organic lawn care techniques, a strong commitment is required from the administration, buildings and grounds, and athletic director; sports program leaders, booster clubs and parents; and guidance from expert organic land care professionals.

Playing Fields Better Now Using Organics and Less Pesticides – The results of a transition to organic lawn care by the New Canaan, Connecticut Dept of Public Works in 2017.

“School grounds get no pesticides at all and that other areas—such as Conner Field—get only one application each year. They are better conditioned now using less pesticides and more organics, more over-seeding and things like that,”
John Howe, Parks Superintendent, New Canaan Department of Public Works
