Proper Sports Turf Maintenance in Bloomfield
Properly maintaining a field for sports use requires attention to detail, as when it isn’t properly done, athletes are at risk of injury. Thankfully there are ways to ensure the safest playing field, and it’s essential to use these methods when dealing with any type of sports turfs. Recently we redid the playing field of Bloomfield Middle School with beautiful results. Safety is important to us, so here are some of the ways we ensure all our sport field jobs are done so that all athletes have a level playing field in order to prevent injury.
Why Proper Maintenance of Sports Turfs is Essential
To properly ensure athletes have the lowest chance on injury on the field, you need to know all the risks so you can reduce them when doing the job. Less risks on the field means less injuries from accidents happening. Here are the risks you can prevent when maintaining a field, and all the risks we look out for.
Keeping the field level is another way to prevent injury on a field. Any level field will allow for better footing compared to a slanted one, or one with holes in the grass or bumps. Both of these are more tripping hazards and can easily harm a running athlete. Even smaller holes can cause injury, as cleats have a chance of getting stuck in the hole, which could easily cause someone to stumble.
The most obvious one, but still very important to look out for, is to check for any equipment left on the field. Any smaller pieces of equipment can easily be left behind on a field and later be a tripping hazard for any athlete who runs over it. You should make sure you have all equipment before you leave the job site and do a quick walk around the field, checking the ground for anything left behind. Make sure all larger rocks, trash, and other debris are removed from the field as well before leaving. Otherwise, you are potentially putting athletes at risk of not being able to participate for months, or even years.
The hardness of soil is another important step you have to take, since a lot of athletes will likely be landing on it. A hard surface can easily cause a lot more injury than a soft one. You should always be conducting tests to find the surface hardness of fields you do, and take the steps to make the soil softer. Otherwise, head injuries and other injuries can become more severe due to the hardness of the ground. Make sure to aerate your soil properly and to do it whenever it needs it. This can help the soil become less compact.
Even when not in use by athletes, you should take care of your fields. If you field is used for events, such as graduation ceremonies, where people are walking on the turf, you should definitely consider a turf protector. Turf protectors can help reduce damage done to turf when walked on. And, like a sidewalk, they can be laid as a pathway to keep people off the turf entirely. This can help keep your turf in the best shape possible, and still let you use sports fields as a place for ceremonies or assemblies.
Ensuring the correct practice can ensure the safety of athletes. You should always be using the right methods when you have an important job that can potentially keep people safer when done correctly.
