This residential property in Ridgewood, New Jersey encompassed replacing the existing lawn with an organic sod installation. After the existing top layer of the lawn was removed a soil test was completed and a layer of composted soil was then placed down upon which the sod would take root. The landscape beds were then reworked as per necessity and design specifications, existing soil growing medium was amended with composted soil, beds were properly edged and planted with native plant species for sustainable landscaping. Beds were then mulched to a depth of approximately 4 inches.
Sustainable landscaping enhances and protect the balance of nature. Developing one however requires a well thought out design and plan that implements and addresses numerous aspects of environmental processes. The existing soil conditions, light exposure and moisture amounts are all things to be considered as these plants are an integral part of the design. Native plants require a lesser input of labor and time, use less fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides to live, grow and thrive.
By utilizing native plants you provide an immediate positive improvement upon the environment and also embrace the regional cultural identity that so often readily disappears in our suburban neighborhoods where native habitats are replaced with vast expanses of lawns, dotted with plant species that are heavily depended upon water, fertilizer and chemicals and so on. This is not a sustainable practice.
Natural landscapes foster a diversity and vast array of habitats for plants, animals and wildlife to flouish within, creating pleasant and welcoming settings and human experiences to share with family and friends. They are also a vital part of the food web providing nectar for hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects, the give shelter to birds. Sustainable Landscaping with native plants fosters and enhances the local biodiversity.
