Mission Statement (Shade Tree Commission)

Our mission is to improve and maintain the quality of life in the Borough of Franklin Lakes by maximizing the environmental, social and economic value of shade trees and forest cover to the community while minimizing the associated costs and liabilities.

Franklin Lakes New Jersey has achieved numerous milestones and designations in the recent year; of which we are extremely proud of and honored to receive. One of which is the recent designation of Franklin Lakes as attaining the Prestigious Sustainable Jersey Certification. To become Sustainable Jersey certified, Franklin Lakes submitted documentation to show it had completed sustainability actions, meeting a minimum of 150 action points for bronze certification.

We were also designated a Tree City USA® by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. This is the 12th consecutive year that Franklin Lakes has earned the Tree City USA designation. Franklin Lakes achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements:

1 – a tree board or department – the Borough’s Shade Tree Commission;
2 – a tree care ordinance;
3 – an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita; and
4 – an Arbor Day observance and Proclamation.

“This is the 12th consecutive year that Franklin Lakes has earned the Tree City USA designation. The designation demonstrates the Borough’s commitment to protecting our tree canopy. Protecting the tree canopy has many benefits such as energy preservation, soil preservation, maintaining property values, as well as a major aesthetic boost to our streets. We were awarded the designation in 2019 because of the diligent work by members of our Shade Tree Commission and, importantly, the work of our Borough Tree Specialist, Kris Hasbrouck. I’d like to also thank Mayor Bivona and the entire Borough Council for their continuing encouragement and support of our efforts in protecting our tree canopy.”
