To start, your lawn likely has plenty of natural refuse you’ll want to remove from the previous fall. Even if you did rake leaves previously, there are likely plenty still left over, as well as other refuse such as twigs, sticks, or dead leaves and grass. You’ll also want to remove any litter that may have blown into your lawn or even unpleasant waste such as dog feces, which can contain pathogens that can be harmful to the composting process.

We always recommend to rake leaves in the fall, as this can prevent a common fungal disease known as snow mold. Raking during the springtime is also always recommended to decrease thatch build-up, and for just removing any extra leaves that might have fallen after raking in the fall. You should also be looking out for any other natural refuse you might have in your garden, like pinecones and other refuse that doesn’t break down very easily.

Pruning is another important task for ensuring the best looking plants in your spring garden. This also ensures a healthier plant and will help ensure your plants have healthy new growth in the spring. Pruning is a very important aspect of the spring cleanup process, as proper pruning will encourage the plant to thrive and grow in the coming months.

Spring cleaning can be a great and enjoyable experience, and doesn’t take very long to completely transform a lawn through a simple process of cleaning up. There are also plenty of other ways to improve your lawn while you’re out there cleaning up, such as getting your beds ready and transplanting any of your existing plants to a better spot.

Other methods of creating beds include raised beds which is our favorite method, or creating berms which are perfect for shrubbery for appearance purposes. Berms and raised beds are perfect for areas with poor soil, and can ensure your plants are growing in the best possible soil environment.

Weed matting can be a very useful addition to your garden beds, and remove a lot of maintenance in the coming spring months. Simply cut out areas where you are going to plant something at and you will have significantly less weeds in your gardens. By blocking off most of your soil with weed matting, you will prevent most weeds from ever growing in any spots you cover up and this can help eliminate plenty of strain on yourself spent removing pesky weeds that just won’t go away.

Once your beds are cleaned up and ready to be planted, you can start planting whatever you want! Hardy perennials, trees, and shrubs are best to be planted during the early spring months and should be fine even if a frost passes through. However, plants like tender perennials and annuals should only be planted after the final frost has passed and you’re sure spring is here to stay.
