Sustainable Landscaping with Native Plants - Sweetspire Itea

“Planting native plants, I myself thought for a long time, was a feel-good thing, a nice but feeble response to our litany of modern-day environmental problems. In the last few years, though, as I have read many dozens of articles and books and interviewed scientists here and abroad, my thinking on the issue has changed. Planting native plants may be the single most important eco-technology that we have to put the broken pieces of our planet back together.”

Sustainable Landscaping with Native Plants

Forget burning bush, Itea Virginica ‘Henry’s Garnet’ is not only a native plant that is pollinator friendly, it’s just as colorful and even more useful as within the realm of landscaping! It grows in full sun to full shade, tolerates wet conditions and environments and requires little pruning and/or maintenance.

Typically sweetspire itea will grow to a height of three to four foot with a similar spread. When it blooms in early May it erupts with lightly scented flowers that are pure white. The fragrant, tiny white flowers borne in cylindrical, drooping racemes that are 3 to 6 inches long and cover the shrub with bloom in late spring to early summer.

A dwarf version is also available which is named Little Henry. It has lightly scented, pure white flowers that shoot like fireworks in the early summer horizon. With a mounded, compact stature it grows to about 1 1/2 to 2 ft in height with a similar spread. It is also a delightful addition to the mixed border. When autumn arrives the summer foliage changes to a dazzling display of oranges and reds, making Little Henry a rewarding experience through out all seasons.
