Organic Gardening with Children

Gardening with your children is a great way for a child to learn to appreciate plant-life. Not only is it fairly simple to teach the basics, but it also can be a very rewarding learning experience for any child who has shown an interest in gardening.

In order to just teach the basics, gardening with kids should be kept fairly simple when starting off. This means using small garden spaces, and easy, fast growing plants, such as green onions, lettuce, beans, or radishes.  Strawberry patches are a good starter plant too that kids will love to watch grow. Some children can get impatient when it comes to gardening, so fast growing plants are a good way to show them the end result of gardening without having to wait several months. If you or your child wish to grow flowers too, here are some that have a hard time wilting if watered adequately and given proper sunlight: daffodils, pansies, marigolds, sunflowers, snapdragons, morning glories, and geraniums.

When teaching your child about gardening, here is some of basic gardening knowledge worth explaining to them:

1.)   Using the right type of soil

2.)   Water the plants adequately

3.)   Place plants in adequate sunlight

4.)   How and why to fertilize your plants

5.)   Provide protection from insects and diseases

6.)   Follow any other directions found on plant tags

In the end, teaching your children about gardening is a great way to teach your child about where their food comes from, the importance of organic gardening, and how ecosystems form in areas with plant-life. You also might even help your child find their calling in life. Not only all this but it makes for a great bonding experience for parents and children, and can create a lasting impression on your child’s ability to be self-sufficient.
