Sustainable Landscaping With Native Plants
July, when all the hoopla about planting annuals has died down, when barbecues with family and friends seems to take the forefront and when many of us think of vacations is upon us. And June being the rainy month we just experienced leads us to forget that our garden plants still tend to get thirsty and need a drink or two also. As we focus on other tasks we forget about deadheading, and who’s going to water all these plants when we go away?
Fret not for July can be full of a diverse range of colors, hues and textures and your garden beds can flourish with minimal maintenance if you just use native plant species. Here’s six (6) varieties of native perennials that bloom during July, many of them lasting into August.
“Growing a natural habitat garden is also one of the most important things each of us can do to help restore a little order to a disordered world.”

Native Perennials for Pollinator Gardens in Northern New Jersey
Worldwide evidence shows that pollinator populations are declining. By creating attractive environments for pollinators in an urban setting you can provide essential habitats for these insects and birds. Habitats may not be widely available in a setting such as a new housing development, but you have the ability and means to provide one, after which your neighbors, upon seeing the benefits you are reaping, will probably follow suit. Pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, are also very interesting to observe, and when you foster a pleasant pollinator-friendly garden you can experience a piece of pure, wild nature in your own backyard.
